Disc Golf Update The Mundelein Park & Recreation District's Disc Golf Facility opened in the summer of 2004. After a great deal of public interest and staff research, the park district board has selected Leo Leathers Park in the Tullamore subdivision for this new recreational opportunity. A nine-hole layout was done by former Mundelein resident Al Friello. Leathers Park was selected for its proximity to Mundelein High School and its accessibility to youngsters who can bicycle to the park (the Lake County bike path borders the south edge of this subdivision).
Disc Golf is among the fastest growing sports in the world! The idea is simple, the game is the same as traditional golf, only the equipment is different. Players make the first throw to a "hole" from the tee area. The second throw is made from the spot the disc comes to rest. Players then "putt" the Disc into an elevated metal target to complete the hole. The player with he lowest number of strokes (throws) wins. Courses generally consists of 9 or 18 holes. Golf discs are especially designed for golf. They are aerodynamically engineered to curve left or right, to provide short range accuracy, or to maximize long-range drives. Players can carry one disc or many; experienced players often carry ten or more in their disc golf bag. The park board will be monitoring this new facility closely. If it is well used and appreciated they will consider building an 18 hole facility at another park.
